Liposculpture with local anaesthesia is a simple surgical solution for hard-to-lose fat and offers many benefits over traditional liposuction. From less downtime to a more comfortable and responsive surgery, the advantages of liposuction with local anaesthesia are why many of our clients elect this body contouring procedure.
However, like traditional liposuction performed under general anaesthesia, this procedure also requires a trained expert’s approach to achieve your desired aesthetic. Dr Aoife Turner is a double board-certified plastic and aesthetic surgeon whose skills and expertise have made her one of Europe’s most sought after aesthetic surgeons. If you have unwanted fat deposits weighing down your physique and want the benefits of local anaesthesia, please schedule a personal consultation at either our Harley Street or our Hamburg offices. Stubborn, Hard-To-Lose Fat
A proper diet and exercise regimen is often advertised as the antidote for fat and a sure-fire way to achieve your desired physique. However, life events and ageing can make weight gain feel out of our control. No matter how many new diet and exercise trends you explore, the stubborn fat deposits just will not budge. This is subcutaneous fat. Resting between the muscle and the skin, subcutaneous fat can veil those hard-earned muscles from appearing prominently on your physique. The body utilizes subcutaneous fat to protect vital organs from external stress, regulate heat loss, and serve as a barrier against dermal infection. Because it possesses vital purposes to the body, subcutaneous fat endures through healthy changes to diet and fitness. So, while it is possible, trying to lose these tenacious fat deposits can be daunting.
Why Local Anaesthesia
Traditionally, liposuction has required general anaesthesia to render the patient unconscious for the entire duration of the procedure. This often leads to a longer downtime for the patient, who must recover from the effects of general anaesthesia in addition to their surgery. Also, not all patients qualify for general anaesthesia. Conditions that may interfere with a patient’s eligibility for general anaesthesia include:
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
Because it comes with additional risks, some people might not qualify or desire to undergo general anaesthesia. However, local anaesthesia does not come with these risks or requirements.
In our bodies, nerve cells send messages to the brain, registering feeling or pressure. The message from the cell travels through sodium channels on the neural membrane and into the central nervous system. Local anaesthetic blocks this nerve impulse transmission in the treated tissue without disrupting the central nervous system or causing an altered mental state. So, the patient may be conscious during the procedure, but the treated tissue is completely numb. Patients who undergo procedures under local anaesthesia are given a mild sedative to ensure that they remain relaxed, and in a gentle twilight state during the procedure.
For those interested in undergoing liposculpture with local anaesthesia, you will need to meet a couple of requirements. First, it is crucial to note that liposculpture is not a weight-loss surgery but rather a body contouring procedure. For those interested, we will make sure you are at a healthy, stable weight before your surgery. A stable weight is required because if weight is gained after liposculpture, the results will be drastically diminished. We also recommend that interested patients be able to put strenuous activities on hold for the first couple of postoperative weeks. While local anaesthesia significantly reduces recovery time, the sutures and treated tissue will need ample time to heal and adjust to their alterations. If you would like to learn more about this advanced liposculpture technique, please schedule an initial consultation with Dr Turner today!
Dr Aoife Turner has helped restore the lives and self-confidence of thousands of clients, from Dublin to Hamburg to Harley Street. With specialized training in plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr Turner has stayed up-to-date on all the latest technological and surgical developments in the plastic surgery industry. Coupling the most advanced surgical technologies with Dr Turner’s expert knowledge and skill, patients receive the highest possible results and care in Europe.
We will begin your consultation with a brief new patient intake interview and a physical examination. After we have learned about your medical history and measured your vitals, we can further determine your eligibility for liposculpture with local anaesthesia. Next, Dr Turner will ask about your ideal aesthetic. Many patients during this point in the process refer to unwanted fatty tissue around their abdomen, thighs, arms, love handles, and back. They often indicate that even through diet and exercise, these pouches of fatty tissue have remained unwaveringly. Dr Turner will examine the areas of concern and note the density of fat as well as the skin’s laxity. Depending on the amount of fat present and how much elasticity remains in the skin, Dr Turner might elect for general anaesthesia and a skin tightening procedure to complement your liposculpture. However, if Dr Turner feels local anaesthesia is right for you, then she will add this to your personalized treatment plan. After she has outlined a plan that addresses each area of concern, Dr Turner will explain your treatment plan and answer any questions you may have. Then, we will schedule a time and date for your procedure. Before you leave our care, we will give you a list of preparatory steps that you need to adhere to in the interim.
Even though local anaesthesia will be used during your procedure, you will still need to take the necessary precautions before your surgery. On your preparation list, there might be individualized steps unique to your procedure, so be sure to read it closely. More general steps include:
- Avoid blood-thinning medications like NSAIDs, aspirin, and ibuprofen as these will cause excessive bleeding during your procedure and may lead to complications
- Pre-fill all prescriptions. After your procedure, you will not want to be running around town to your local chemist, but rather at home focusing on rest and recuperation.
On the day of your procedure, Dr Turner will meet with you to discuss your treatment plan and answer any last-minute questions. You will enter a relaxed, dreamy state with a mild sedative. Then, Dr Turner will administer local anaesthesia into the target areas. Once the area is numbed, Dr Turner will make a small incision close to the fat deposit. She will then use a tumescent fluid that also contains local anaesthesia, lignocaine, into the fatty tissue. This tumescent fluid will help dull the nerve receptors even more and coagulate the fatty tissue. With swollen fat cells, Dr Turner can more easily target and extract the subcutaneous fat. Once she has improved the appearance of your treated area, she will carefully suture the incision closed and wrap the area in a compression bandage.
Since local anaesthesia keeps the patient comfortable long after the procedure has ended, and the body quickly metabolizes the sedative, you will be able to walk out of our care. The treated area(s) will need time to heal fully. You should wear the compression wrap at all times other than when you shower or bathe. Be sure not to disturb the sutures or apply too much pressure on the treated tissue. At first, you might not be able to see the final results because the area will be swollen. But, after a couple of days to a week, you will notice the swelling has subsided and the stubborn, hard-to-lose fat is finally off your physique.
Once the treated area has fully healed, you will be able to see your silhouette’s new contours. The area will appear more sculpted and defined while your muscles are showcased more prominently. To ensure these results endure for a long time, it is best to continue leading a healthy, active lifestyle.
The cost of your liposculpture with local anaesthesia will depend on how many different areas you have treated during your surgery. We will discuss cost and financing options during your initial consultation. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at +44 20 3883 8174.
